Back pain

Back pain affects almost everyone at some point, causing pain and incapacity and often time off work. Back pain can be multifactorial but common causes are poor posture, lifting, bad seating or beds, sport or injury, stress, pregnancy and general wear and tear. We will identify the cause and treat your back pain. We will also advise you on how to keep it under control.

Neck pain and pain after traffic accidents

Today’s modern living causes immense problems for the neck and shoulder region. Poor work posture, repetitive tasks, stress and inactivity can all cause pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulders. This can often be associated with headaches. A large percentage of neck injuries are caused by car accidents, but the neck is always vulnerable as it supports the weight of your head. Neck injuries can occur at relatively low speeds depending on the head position at the time of impact. Pain is not always instant and can arise several weeks, even months later. Chiropractic manipulation and muscle work will help restore normal movement to your neck. You may also be prescribed exercises to help you regain strength and flexibility and relieve the long-term pain and discomfort.

Shoulder, arm and hand pain

As with leg pain, the most important thing to do is to determine what is causing your pain. We have been trained to accurately diagnose the problem and treat accordingly. Whether the pain is from a frozen shoulder, tennis/golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury or radiating from dysfunction in the neck, we will advise the best course of action.

Migraine

There are many different types of migraine. Some may arise from muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders and decreased movement of the joints in your neck and upper back. Some are far more severe with some types arising from irritation of the nerves close to the vertebrae of the neck or even from muscle spasm. They are often associated with nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Some people can be sensitive to light or experience blurred vision and flashing lights. We will diagnose the cause of your migraine and treat you accordingly. This is most commonly with specific adjustments particularly to the neck and upper back and soft tissue therapy to the surrounding muscles. Painkillers, although are of some help, they do not address the root cause of the problem, therefore will not be of use in the long run. Also, a common side effect of most painkillers is headaches.

Pregnancy and child birth

Chiropractic can be of immense help to pregnant women, babies and children. The fact that chiropractic is a totally drug-free treatment is worthy of special note in these cases. Physical and chemical changes in a woman’s body during pregnancy can aggravate existing spinal problems and also create new ones. This is where we come in. Women may also experience lower back and pelvic pain in late pregnancy and we can advise you on how to adapt your lifestyle to make daily routines easier. Spinal manipulation can also make childbirth easier by ensuring good alignment of the spinal joints. Birth and infancy can sometimes be difficult and traumatic for both mother and baby and that is why we recommend a check-up for both as soon as possible. Childbirth is a normal process that the newborn needs to experience to prepare them for the outside world. The compression and torsion on the head and neck are all necessary. Caesarean sections remove this normal birth process and can be traumatic for baby, as they have no preparation and warning of the outside world. Surgical intervention with forceps or ventouse also creates abnormally high stresses on the baby’s head and neck. This can lead to many uncomfortable symptoms for the newborn. As your professional chiropractor, we will assess your baby’s spine and head for abnormal motion and distortion. When present, this can be helped with fingertip pressure to relax muscle tension. Most babies sleep through this process as it is so gentle.

Babies and childhood

As your baby becomes a toddler they will experience all the normal bumps and bangs associated with crawling and learning to walk. This can cause their spine to become misaligned which, in turn, can cause problems elsewhere in the body. It is far easier and quicker to deal with spinal problems at this stage rather than ignore and allow them to become chronic in later life.
Childhood osteopathy

Arthritic pain

Arthritis affects people of all ages and has many causes. The most common is osteoarthritis, also known as spondylosis or wear and tear. Degeneration of the joints cannot normally be reversed; however, treatment can decrease the associated pain and generally increase mobility and helps slow down progression.

Sports injury

Sports injuries are very often no more than everyday problems that have been exposed when an occasional athlete over-stresses their body when taking up a new activity. Participating in sport may also leave you open to repetitive strain injury and over-use of specific parts of the body resulting in shoulder tendonitis, tennis/golfer's elbow or even carpal tunnel syndrome. We can help you recover quicker and with less pain. We can help athletes get their body parts moving well again and recommend that you should be fit enough before you start any strenuous sport. For serious athletes, pre-season checks can identify, treat and strengthen any weak areas before injuries occur. Regular check-ups will help to maintain optimum performance.

Joint pain

We understand the working of every joint in the body and will identify whether or not pain is being referred from your spine before treating you accordingly. Once again, if your specific problem is not listed above or you wish to discuss anything with us, then please feel free to call.
